People forgive an agent that says it is unsure. They do not forgive one that is confidently wrong. The fastest way to lose a user is a fluent answer that turns out to be invented.
Trust is a design decision, and it shows up in small moments.
What earns trust
- Show the source. Let people check the work.
- Admit uncertainty out loud instead of guessing.
- Make actions reversible, or confirm before the ones that are not.
- Keep the agent inside a scope it can actually handle.
The compounding effect
Every honest answer makes the next one more believable. Every confident mistake resets the counter. Design for the honest path and the agent gets more useful over time, not less.
An agent that admits what it does not know is more useful than one that never does.
